Questions

The questions we hear most often. Answered plainly.

If yours isn’t here, the fifteen-minute call is where it gets answered, and that conversation is free.

Medical and clinical

  • Is Alpha Human a medical service?

No, and the distinction matters. We are a precision nutrition and prevention programme. The testing is scientific; the protocol is nutritional. What we are not is a diagnostic or treatment service, and we do not claim to be. For anything clinical (interpreting a pathology finding, managing a condition, adjusting medication) we work in parallel with your physician, not in their place. If something in your panel warrants medical follow-up, we will say so directly and tell you what kind of specialist to see.

  • Can this replace my doctor?

No, and we would not want it to. What it does is give you and your physician substantially more to work with than a standard annual health check: 110 markers, a genetic baseline, and a protocol built from the two together. Your results are yours to share with any doctor you choose.

  • Who reviews my protocol?

One of our founders reviews every protocol before it reaches a member.

The science

  • How accurate is DNA-based nutrition advice?

It depends heavily on which variant is being discussed, and we would rather be precise about that than oversell it. Four gene-diet interactions have strong, replicated evidence behind them: caffeine metabolism via CYP1A2, saturated fat response via APOE, folate requirement via MTHFR, and vitamin D utilisation via VDR.9 Those carry the most weight in your protocol. Others, like FTO and TCF7L2, are well-established disease risk markers where the dietary interaction is less settled, so we weight them lower. Much of the broader nutrigenomics literature is promising but not yet settled, and we do not build protocol decisions on it. Your bloodwork always carries more weight than a genetic prediction.

  • Why do you keep emphasising Indian reference data?

Because most genomic datasets and reference ranges were built primarily on European-ancestry populations, and risk scores derived from them measurably underperform when applied to South Asians.1 Indians also carry a documented and distinct metabolic phenotype: more body fat and less lean mass at the same BMI, more visceral and liver fat, and insulin resistance appearing earlier.2,3 Reading Indian results against Western norms means flagging problems late.

  • Why don’t you re-test my DNA?

Your genome does not change. Sequencing it twice would tell you the same thing twice.

  • Why 110 biomarkers and not more?

More markers is not automatically better. Every marker on our panel is there because it is either actionable through nutrition and lifestyle, or because it materially changes how we read the rest. Adding markers that generate anxiety without changing the protocol is testing for the sake of a bigger number.

Testing and logistics

  • Where are the tests done?

Sample collection happens at your home (a blood draw, plus a DNA sample you collect yourself from the kit) and takes about ten minutes. Across India, we cover Delhi NCR and major metros; partner facilities handle everything outside those areas. The DNA sample is shipped to Illumina NGS sequencing infrastructure. Your blood goes to NABL-certified partner labs. For members outside India, we route both through certified international partners appropriate to your location.

  • How much of my time does this take?

Ten minutes for sample collection. Then 7 to 14 days while we decode and build your first protocol. After it goes live, a few minutes a day in the app, plus your scheduled counselling sessions. The heaviest time investment is at the start. Once you’re in the protocol, day-to-day friction is low.

  • Do you serve members outside India?

Yes, and this is a significant part of who we serve. The Indian diaspora carries the same metabolic predispositions whether they live in Mumbai, Dubai, London, or Toronto, and the gaps in Western precision health tools apply regardless of where you currently live. Sample collection runs through certified international partners in your country; counselling, your dashboard, and your protocol are all accessible globally. Overseas pricing is worked out on the consultation call, since logistics vary by location.

Programme and results

  • How long before I see results?

Some things shift within weeks, particularly energy, sleep quality and digestion. Biomarker changes take longer. We re-test when your own data says it is time rather than on a fixed schedule, and the protocol is rebuilt from what that shows.

  • What if my numbers don’t improve?

Then we re-examine the protocol rather than repeat it. The whole reason we re-test is to find out what worked and what didn’t. A programme that never re-measures never has to answer this question, which is precisely the problem with most of them.

  • Will I lose weight?

Often, but it is not what we optimise for. We target metabolic health, and body composition usually follows. If rapid weight loss is your only goal, there are faster options, and we would rather say so.

  • Do I need a wearable?

No, though the protocol gets better with one. Whoop, Apple Health and Google Fit sync today. Oura, Fitbit and Garmin are coming.

Privacy and data

  • What happens to my DNA data?

It is stored encrypted. It is used to build and refine your protocol. It is never sold, not to insurers, not to pharmaceutical companies, not to research firms, not to anyone. Genetic data carries a permanence that other personal data doesn’t, and we think that warrants a level of care above what standard privacy policies describe. Your data is yours. We hold it in trust for as long as you are a member.

  • Can I delete my data?

Yes, at any time, by asking us. Your genetic and blood data are removed.

  • Is my wearable data safe?

Access is read-only and tokenised through each provider’s own authentication. We never see your login credentials.

Cost and commitment

  • Why does it cost what it does?

You are paying for a genomic sequencing run on Illumina platforms, a 110-marker blood panel at NABL-certified labs, months of 1:1 counselling with a qualified nutritionist, and a protocol reviewed by a named scientist. On the twelve-month tier you are paying for that blood panel twice.

  • Is there a subscription?

Yes. Alpha Human runs as a subscription.

  • Are supplements included?

Not currently, and the reason is deliberate. Every supplement recommendation we made would carry a financial incentive on our end, and we think that is the wrong arrangement for a programme built on the premise that your protocol should follow your data, not our margins. When a supplement programme does arrive, it will be built from enough internal evidence to justify specific recommendations rather than general wellness claims. For now, if your panel shows a deficiency that warrants supplementation, we tell you what to look for and you source it wherever you choose.
